Five road trip destinations in the North

With the bank holiday weekend just around the corner, we’ve put together a list of our favourite road trip destinations in the North, so you can venture along the UK’s most scenic roads and soak up the views. From the Corolla to the C-HR to the RAV4, Toyota has a range of vehicles which are perfect for road tripping around the United Kingdom.

Peak District

The UK’s first ever and much-loved national park, the Peak District, spreads across several counties. Its dramatic and diverse landscape includes vast reservoirs and a network of caves and caverns. It is scattered with idyllic villages and market towns of Castleton, Bakewell and Matlock Bath plus stately homes Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall. Edale marks one end of the iconic Pennine Way or head into the Pennines along the famous Snake Pass and hit a high point of 510m above sea level.

Which car? The Toyota C-HR will power through the peaks with its engaging hybrid powertrain, and won both Best Small Family Car in the Parkers New Car Awards last year.

If you fancy a coastal drive, discover the Northumberland coast for impressive views of castles, islands and sand dunes. Rich with history, the wild coastline will take you to the desolate but beautiful Holy Island of Lindisfarne, Bamburgh Castle and ruins of medieval Dunstanburgh Castle. A visit to the Farne Islands could mean you see thousands of colourful puffins at this time of year, or adorable grey seal pups in autumn.

Yorkshire Dales

Often considered a jaw-dropping driving experience, the narrow Yorkshire Dales roads are lined with dry-stone walls and overlook scenic valleys below. Whether you’re passing the impressive 400 metre Ribblehead Viaduct, the curving limestone amphitheatre of Malham Cove or the impressive Aysgarth Falls, you won’t be disappointed. Head just south of the dales for the charming village of Haworth, otherwise known as the Brontë Country.

Which car? The All New Corolla has been called the king of compact family cars and was awarded Affordable Hybrid Car of the Year 2019 by Auto Express. It has all the power and precision necessary for Yorkshire’s country lanes.

Lake District

Though slightly further afield, some of the UK’s most remarkable views can be found on the winding 30-mile route from Kendal to Keswick through the Lake District. See sprawling lakes with tranquil waters, ancient woodland and mountain ridges in all their glory. Join the northeastern edge of the largest of the lakes, Lake Windermere, which is surrounded by mountainous peaks and historic villages, including Bowness-on-Windermere. There are plenty of impressive drives around the vast National Park so we’d recommend spending a couple of days here.

North York Moors

Spectacularly vibrant in purple hues, the North York Moors National Park is one of the largest expanses of heather moorland in the UK. A picnic and picture-perfect landscape, explore the rugged cliffs, secluded coves and sheltered harbours of the coast, from the gothic town of Whitby to Robin Hood’s Bay. With naturally clear skies and low levels of pollution, the North York Moors is one the best places in the UK to stargaze and see the Milky Way with the naked eye; Low Dalby has an annual Starfest each August where you can enjoy the vast open skies.

Which car? The All New RAV4 is the perfect choice for families with four-legged friends. The dog-friendly vehicle accommodates all the family, and can be personalised with additional storage, roof rails and dog guards for the canine companions in the back.
